We have recently implemented many changes to the library in accordance with the Maine State Library who has worked in consort with the Governor's office, the Maine CDC and the DECD (Department of Economic and Community Development) on reopening guidelines for libraries. We have jumped through many hoops to comply with their guidelines and are prepared for a safe reopening to our residents. Please be patient as we all continue to adjust to these changes, and adhere to the guidelines that help to prevent the spread of COVID.
Anyone who plans to visit the library must:
-Wear a face covering
(we offer curbside pickup for anyone who is unable to tolerate a mask)
-Use the interior entrance
(through Town Office entrance, then through the solarium)
-Fill out a COVID Symptoms Screening Form
-Stay at least 6 feet apart from other people
-Be age 18 or older
-Limit your visit to 15 to 20 minutes
-Leave personal belongings, food and drink in your car
-Follow self-check out procedure
-Follow directional arrows
-Stay home if you are showing signs of illness
-Return books to the drop box only in baggies provided

COVID-19 INFORMATION:
In person library visits require restricting visits to current patrons of the library who are Mercer residents until further notice. Only one or two will be allowed in the library at a time (only one from each household), and your visit will be limited to between 15 - 20 minutes. You must wear a face covering during your visit, AND maintain 6' distance from others, avoid the administrator's desk, follow directional arrows and all other procedural instructions during your visit in compliance with MaineCDC and state government requirements.
If you are in a high risk category (age 65 or older, have diabetes, or are otherwise immunocompromised) please call (779-3977) or email the library (@ mercershawlibrary@gmail.com) to arrange for an appointment around the regular open hours. If you prefer not to come in and/or cannot wear a face covering, we would be happy to prepare a package for curbside pick up.
CURBSIDE PROCEDURES:
After you select an available book, a book bag will be prepared for you and you will be contacted by email or phone. When you are finished with your book(s), return it/them in the Ziploc bag provided to the library's drop-box next to the Mercer Town Office entrance. Please contact Mary @ mercershawlibrary@gmail.com or call 207-779-3977 (leave a message) to inquire about available books or if you have further concerns or questions.
FYI-Preparation and handling of books:
All books prepared for curbside pick up or otherwise available for checking out of Mercer Shaw Library have been quarantined for a minimum of seven days. When books are returned via the drop-box or handled in the library, they are put into quarantine for seven days before becoming available for check out. Very few books have been returned to the library in person. Most books have been returned through the drop-box since March 17th, 2020.
Antibacterial and antiviral methods have been used while handling the books including the use of face coverings and gloves. The library and our procedures have been reconfigured observing requirements and recommendations by the Maine State Library and the MCDC.
