The Mercer Shaw Library was established in 1882. After the Mercer Elementary School was consolidated into the Mill Stream Elementary School in Norridgewock in 2008, the building became the vibrant Mercer Community Center. Two years later, the public library was moved from its original Main Street location (pictured above left) into one of the classrooms of the former school (pictured above right). In addition to the public library, The Mercer Community Center houses the Town Office and serves as the polling location for the town of Mercer. The gymnasium, stage, solarium, and other former classrooms are available for a variety of events. Events such as yoga and craft classes, town and private meetings, public suppers, performances, pickleball games and clinics, monthly Mug Up Social Gatherings, canine obedience training, music lessons and rehearsals, craft fairs and flea markets occur on an ongoing or intermittent basis. The playground and ballfield are still used by local families, and several indoor/outdoor festivities take place there throughout the year. The community center is also home to Kool Runnins, a Jamaican takeout restaurant serving authentic and delicious meals Wednesday through Sunday.
